What do you think of when you think of service?

Perhaps old images of service – where the poor were VERY poor…

When even servants were effectively slaves and had to work a certain number of years to gain their freedom.

Perhaps your view of service is a much more modern perspective – services such as hair salons, restaurants or customer service centers.

Biblical Service

What did the Bible writers have in mind when they spoke of Service?

Service, in the Bible, was normally something done by a slave; tasks performed by ‘lesser’ persons for those who controlled their existence.
Service with regard to God usually concerned temple worship and its rituals (e.g., Exodus 31:10; 35:19; Luke 1:23), but service to humans often involved forms of bondage (e.g. Genesis 30:26; Exodus 1:14).
For Paul, the service a person owed God was to be displayed through service to one’s neighbor, which constituted service to Christ (Rom. 12:1–2; 14:17–18; Gal. 5:13; see also 1 Cor. 9:19; 2 Cor. 4:5).

This means that the service given, was not conditional, it was to be a freely given service – without expectation.

An Example of Selfless Service

For context: this is a short clip about a military Captain who was performing security duty for political leaders who were attending a meeting in Afghanistan.

Jesus – Serving Others

Before we look at what Jesus said on the topic, did you catch what Simon Sinek said:

  • Military – we give medals to people willing to sacrifice themselves so that others may gain.
  • Business – we give bonuses to people who are willing to sacrifice others so that we may gain.

Do we understand what he is saying there?

And Jesus called them to him and said to them, “You know that those who are considered rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:42-45

“For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

Matthew 25:35-40

“Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.”

Romans 12:10

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord.”

1 Peter 4:10-11

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”

Mark 10:45

“For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.”

Galatians 5:13

“Rendering service with a good will as to the Lord and not to man, knowing that whatever good anyone does, this he will receive back from the Lord, whether he is a slave or free.”

Ephesians 6:7-8

And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Joshua 24:15

Did Jesus teach passivism?

So, the message is clear – serve one another and serve as an example to others.
Does this mean that others should walk all over us? Should we be a doormat?
Is there any evidence that Jesus was a pushover?

Turn the other cheek

But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you.

Matthew 5:39-42

In Jesus’ time, “to be struck on the right cheek was to be given a hostile, back-handed insult” with the back of the right hand. In that culture, it was forbidden to touch or strike anyone with the left hand; the left hand was for dirty things.
To turn the other cheek was to surprise the insulter, saying, nonviolently, “you are treating me as an unequal, but I need to be treated as an equal.” Jesus is saying: if you are slapped on the cheek of inferiority, turn the cheek of equal dignity.

The second example relates to the experience of indebtedness in loan collection proceedings in court: “If anyone wants to sue you and take your coat” (Mt 5:40).
A poor person had to pledge their cloak which must be returned by night to keep that person warm (Deut 24:10–13).
Jesus’ response: “Give your cloak as well” is astonishing, for handing over one’s outer and inner garments meant being naked in court.
Standing naked, dishonors the creditor, exposes the greed of his action and bringing shame to him in court.
Roman society had rules and limits as to what could be done – to prevent rising up and revolt from the occupied people against the ruling Romans.

Similarly, Soldiers of the Roman Army, had the legal right to force any subject of an occupied territory to carry their heavy packs and gear for them.
However, the legal limit was 1,000 paces — that is, one Roman mile (approximately half a mile today).
To offer to go the extra mile was to put them in a position where they were breaking the law and you gained the upper hand.

To maintain order across the vast Roman empire, there were limits to how you could treat non-Roman citizens or soldiers. If these rules were not followed, the people could revolt – and given how few Romans there were to subjects, they absolutely did not want this to happen.

The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there. And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables. And he told those who sold the pigeons, “Take these things away; do not make my Father’s house a house of trade.” His disciples remembered that it was written, “Zeal for your house will consume me.”

John 2:13–17

So we know that Jesus was not a passivist – which means he was not a doormat, and neither should we be.

Contract Thinking

We have discussed contract thinking and covenant thinking, and the differences between the two.

When might this be appropriate?

Contracts

There are many situations in the world when contracts are necessary. We are unable to simply trust the other party to do the right or honorable thing, so we need a contract to ensure that their obligations are met.

For example, a work contract, a contract to buy a house, a contract for building a garage, etc.

Contracts can help to ensure that we are not taken advantage of and there are legal protections in place.

Covenant Thinking

This is the ideal. This is the relationship between God and His people.

When will earthly covenants fail?

A key feature of being in Covenant is that we are not acting selfishly…
Selfish actions are not Covenant actions…
Selfish actions are not Christ-like actions…
Selfish actions are ego-driven and take us away from Covenant relationships.

What does this mean for us?

Jesus: Whoever would be great must be your servant


Peter: serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms

  • How we treat those closest to us is the best reflection of who we are in Christ – are you the “because they would have done it for me” person?
  • With that said, I do not believe that we are called to be doormats

Outside the Body – “And if anyone will not receive you or listen to your words, shake off the dust from your feet when you leave that house or town.”

Matthew 10:14

Inside the Body – “If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector

Matthew 18:15-17

There are no simple rules to apply, no easy answers…
If in doubt, serve.
If Covenant is not appropriate, then something else will need to be put in place.
And in all things – Pray!

#1. What do most modern churches look like?

Does the modern Church reflect what a New Testament Church looked like?

  • First Baptist Church
  • Providence Church

  • Aspiring to have a TV ministry and 1000’s attending

Example features:

  • Thousands of attendees?
  • Flashy sound and light show?
  • A paid staff?
  • A paid preacher?
  • What other features spring to mind?

#2. What do worldly organizations look like?

—Managers

–>Authority flowing down a hierarchy

Example features:

  • Thousands of employees
  • Flashy gimmicks to attract people
  • A paid staff
  • A paid figurehead
  • Permanent and dedicated premises
  • Always needing more growth, more revenue/income
  • What other features spring to mind?

#3. Where did the New Testament Churches meet?

We know that some were able to meet in Temples, but this was because they were still attached to the Jewish religion – they were ‘hedging their bets’ and attending both:

And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people.
Acts 2:45–47

Great persecution, followed resulting in Christians having to meet in their homes or in caves:

And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 Devout men buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him. 3 But Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison. 
Acts 8:1–3

There are other references to meetings in homes…

“When he [Peter] realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who is called Mark, where there were many people gathered in prayer ”
Acts 12:12

… including Paul sending greetings to house churches:

Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks but all the churches of the Gentiles give thanks as well. Greet also the church in their house.
Romans 16:3-5

#4. Who is the Head of the Church?

Jesus Christ is the only Head of the Church

He is the head of the church, which is his body

And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. 
Ephesians 1:22–23

And he is the head of the body, the church. 
Colossians 1:18

The headquarters of Christ’s Church is where the Head is – in heaven:

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also

John 14:1–3

And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” 
Acts 1:9–11

In other words – there is no place in God’s plan for a Pope, President, CEO or Dictator!

#5. Who does the Bible say oversees Churches?

In Acts 20:17-35, Paul speaks directly to the elders, saying that the Holy Spirit made them overseers of the flock.
The same group are referred to, interchangeably as elders and overseers.
In Greek, elders is πρεσβυτέρους (presbyterous) and overseers is ἐπισκόπους (episkopous).

There is a consistent description of the Qualifications for Elders and we can see this in Titus 1:5-9, 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and 1 Peter 5:1-5.

Qualifications for Elders

This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you— if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
Titus 1:5-9
Qualifications for Overseers

The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.
1 Timothy 3:1-7
Shepherd the Flock of God

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 
1 Peter 5:1–5

These are the Shepherds – the ones who are overall responsible. Elders oversee the Spiritual needs of the Body.

#6. Deacon – another key role

As stated, Deacons look after the physical needs of the church.

Qualifications for Deacons

Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things. Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. 
1 Timothy 3:8–13.
And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. 
Acts 6:1–3.

Could we, for example, have a Teaching Ministry or a Healing Ministry?

If we did, who would they be accountable to?

  • Our Church Body concluded that we could establish these.
  • Leaders, appointed by the Elders (and approved by the Body) would be accountable to the Elders.

What other roles could exist in a Church and how would they fit in?

  • Our Church Body concluded that other roles would depend on the needs of the Body.
  • Leadership would typically be accountable to the Elders (though Elders could delegate as they saw fit).

#8. Should our work for the Lord be paid?

For you remember, brothers, our labor and toil: we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our conduct toward you believers.

1 Thessalonians 2:9–10
Warning Against Idleness

Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s bread without paying for it, but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. It was not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.
2 Thessalonians 3:6–12

Conclusion

  • Our work should not be paid – our reward is not on earth
  • Our Body concluded that although this was the position of our Body, we could hire contractors to perform specific tasks
  • Our Body also concluded that this was not an absolute position – Paul was expressing a strong preference not a command from God

In the Wilderness

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
Why are you so far from saving me, from the words of my groaning?
O my God, I cry by day, but you do not answer,
and by night, but I find no rest.

Yet you are holy,
enthroned on the praises of Israel.
In you our fathers trusted; 
they trusted, and you delivered them.
To you they cried and were rescued; 
in you they trusted and were not put to shame.

Psalm 22:1–5

You can see the anguish, the pain, the feeling of being in the wilderness… lost, alone in this first 2 verses. In the last 3 verses, the knowledge of the Good, Good Father who has not forsaken him and would not forsake them… they are not alone.

Jesus in the Wilderness

Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” But he answered, “It is written, “ ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ ” Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “ ‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “ ‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’ ” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’ ” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “ ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’ ” Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

Matthew 4:1–11

We see that it was God who placed Jesus into the wilderness to be tempted. Sure enough, the enemy came along to tempt and test.
In the wilderness, though we know Jesus would have been leaning into prayer
He was alone and without worldly distraction – he would have been deep in prayer, and meditation – closer to God.

David in the Wilderness

Then David and his men, who were about six hundred, arose and departed from Keilah, and they went wherever they could go. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he gave up the expedition. And David remained in the strongholds in the wilderness, in the hill country of the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul sought him every day, but God did not give him into his hand.

1 Samuel 23:13–14

1 Samuel 23:15-29 – Saul pursues David…
Yet…
1 Samuel 24 – David spares Saul’s life
1 Samuel 26 – David again spares Saul’s life
…and more!

  • David spent a long time in the wilderness
  • God allowed the events to happen – He was behind the events.
  • God used the events to test, to refine, to mold David.

We see that, again, God has a purpose for the wilderness – to grow, to test, to prove. Our character either shines, through or is built during the wilderness.

Israel in the Wilderness

Then Moses made Israel set out from the Red Sea, and they went into the wilderness of Shur. They went three days in the wilderness and found no water. When they came to Marah, they could not drink the water of Marah because it was bitter; therefore it was named Marah. And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, “What shall we drink?” And he cried to the LORD, and the LORD showed him a log, and he threw it into the water, and the water became sweet.
There the LORD made for them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them, saying, “If you will diligently listen to the voice of the LORD your God, and do that which is right in his eyes, and give ear to his commandments and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, your healer.”
Then they came to Elim, where there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they encamped there by the water.

Exodus 15:22–27

  • In this passage, the Israelites have just left Egypt and crossed the Red Sea.
  • Note: “if you will diligently listen to the voice of the LORD and do that which is right in his eyes… I will put none of the diseases on you that I put on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, your healer.” God expects and demands that we listen to him and follow him.
  • When we talk about Israel in the wilderness it is often described as they left Egypt and then went into 40 years wilderness
  • Let’s take a more detailed look

School of the Spirit not Man

Staying in submission to the Holy Spirit is a journey that requires constant taking stock and analysis of what we are following, feasting on, agreeing to, and with whom are running.
Jesus said it like this:

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Matthew 6:24.

Money, fame, power are what often pull people away from God.

Beware coming under man’s yoke – under ungodly authority. Brothers and sisters in Christ can be helpful mentors and Holy Spirit led teachers and evangelists, but they are no substitute for submission to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

When you trade your freedom for unhealthy alignment, it only creates disastrous fruit, and eventually you become discouraged and disillusioned regarding your call.

Protect your calling
Protect your anointing
Protect your own legacy by not allowing man to make small modifications to you that over time steal from the purity of who you are

Paul’s Concern for the Galatians

8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. 9 But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more? 10 You observe days and months and seasons and years! 11 I am afraid I may have labored over you in vain. 
12 Brothers, I entreat you, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong. 13 You know it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you at first, 14 and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. 15 What then has become of your blessedness? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have gouged out your eyes and given them to me. 16 Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth? 17 They make much of you, but for no good purpose. They want to shut you out, that you may make much of them. 18 It is always good to be made much of for a good purpose, and not only when I am present with you, 19 my little children, for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ is formed in you! 20 I wish I could be present with you now and change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.

One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children for slavery; she is Hagar. 25 Now Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia; she corresponds to the present Jerusalem, for she is in slavery with her children. 26 But the Jerusalem above is free, and she is our mother. 27 For it is written, 
                  “Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; 
      break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor! 
                  For the children of the desolate one will be more 
      than those of the one who has a husband.” 
28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29 But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. 30 But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31 So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.

Our Faith is a narrow door…. The ways of the world, the ways of the majority, are not God’s ways.
As we said some weeks ago God’s work through the small, the meek, the weak.
Even Moses did not feel up to the task!

But Moses said to God, “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” He said, “But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”

God is in the details, and He has equipped us with so much more than we could ever know we possess. Jesus promised us:

“Truly, truly I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father.”

John 14:12

Jesus has the heart and ability to find the least likely candidates for a baptism of love and the Holy Spirit, and just opens the windows of heaven over them. He doesn’t care how messy we are. He called Matthew and the Pharisees had a fit.

And as Jesus reclined at table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and sinners came and were reclining with Jesus and his disciples. And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?” But when he heard it, he said, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means: ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Matthew 9:10-13

Then there was Zaccheus, then a promiscuous woman about to be stoned, and also a Samaritan adulteress… and let’s not forget the twelve, all of whom had their own issues and stuff going on.

Yet, Jesus only saw the treasure they carried. He saw the hearts of people and called them up to walk in it! Look at how He saw it in Nathanael!

The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!” Jesus answered him, “Because I said to you, ‘I saw you under the fig tree,’ do you believe? You will see greater things than these.” And he said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

John 1:44-51

Jesus calls each of us and equips us to be a solid piece of equipment for service to the Kingdom.

Today, let’s think about what He sees in each of us. What is God equipping you for? What hidden gifts are incubating inside you?

Holy Spirit Gifts

To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

1 Corinthians 12:7–11.

For as in one body we have many members, and the members do not all have the same function… Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

Romans 12:4 – 8.

Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.

1 Corinthians 12:27–28

So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.

Ephesians 4:11-16

… one has died for all, therefore all have died; and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. From now on, therefore, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we once regarded Christ according to the flesh, we regard him thus no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. The Equipment

The Keys (Greens)

The keys represent the revelators, the equippers, the trainers, the disciplers, and the imparters that equip the body for service and reveal the secrets/revelation of the Kingdom.

In that day I will call my servant Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, and I will clothe him with your robe, and will bind your sash on him, and will commit your authority to his hand. And he shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah. And I will place on his shoulder the key of the house of David. He shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.

Isaiah 22:20-22

And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

Matthew 16: 18-19

Keys are used to pass the baton and guide those God is raising up, uncovering the unlimited resources available to the Kingdom. The keys unlock and disclose the road ahead. They will clear the debris of old religious mindsets, will champion truth, and will raise up the army of God.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Generosity, Helps, Interpretation, Knowledge

The Hammers (Reds)

Hammers are refitters, repairing and restoring the areas of the Church from the inside out. They challenge and confront stale forms and systems that bear no fruit.

Hammers move against cultural and religious norms and don’t belong to a particular denomination. They have the language and scope to clearly state scriptural intention, remove outdated traditions, and clear the path to unity, connection and creativity.

These people carry a deep knowledge of Kingdom infrastructure and work alongside apostles to build and grow through new strategies. They don’t fault find, but they carry a divine blueprint for how to break out of areas of stagnation.

Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test! I hope you will find out that we have not failed the test. But we pray to God that you may not do wrong—not that we may appear to have met the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed. For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth. For we are glad when we are weak and you are strong. Your restoration is what we pray for. For this reason I write these things while I am away from you, that when I come I may not have to be severe in my use of the authority that the Lord has given me for building up and not for tearing down.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Generosity, Administrating, Leadership, Wisdom, Apostles, Elders/Pastors, Service

Apostle (ἀπόστολος, apostolos). Someone, or something, sent. Derived from the verb “to send out” (ἀποστέλλειν, apostellein). In the New Testament, usually refers to someone sent as an authorized agent by Jesus or the Christian community (Matt 10:22 Cor 8:23Heb 3:1).

The Pens (Whites)

These equippers serve as scribes, songwriters, psalmists, authors, policy writers… those who carry the Word through their creative or administrative gift. Those who carry this gift will light up the word of God and draw the world to Jesus through their anointed words.

God will place a new song in His people, a new understanding in their hearts and the pens will bring an awareness to the new thing God is doing.

My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the King; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer.

Psalm 45:1

This is an historical season for the Body of Christ and God is raising up prophetic pens to be messengers in His hand and articulate His heart.

The Bells (Oranges)

Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy hill. Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming. It is close at hand.

Joel 2:1

God is equipping bell ringers to call the Body to worship and prayer, but more importantly to justice and liberty. The bells ring out the sound of freedom and peace to administer truth and justice. They are truth seekers and truth speakers.

But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

John 16:13

The church must pay attention to the bells as they are the ones hearing and speaking the instructions of the Spirit.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Apostles, Generosity, Faith, Service, Encouragement / Exhortation

Apostle (ἀπόστολος, apostolos). Someone, or something, sent. Derived from the verb “to send out” (ἀποστέλλειν, apostellein). In the New Testament, usually refers to someone sent as an authorized agent by Jesus or the Christian community (Matt 10:22 Cor 8:23Heb 3:1).

Timepieces (Blues)

And God said, “Let there be lights in the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, and let them be lights in the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so.

Genesis 1:14-15

God intended for humanity to pay attention to the times.  In King David’s day, we still knew this.  When David built his army, he specifically included such men:

from Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do—200 chiefs, with all their relatives under their command;

1 Chronicles 12: 32

The name Issachar means: there is recompense.

Timepieces see the promise on the other side of the wilderness and speak of restoration in the midst of calamity.  They are the reconcilers.

God’s timepieces are a bit different from ours… the hands on the clock go backwards and forwards in unpredictable ways. These gifted timepieces sense the changes and shifts in God’s epoch cycles and are able to predict when God is moving. Timekeepers see beyond what is currently happening and provide a roadmap through blind or unknown periods.  They connect the dots for those who are lost.

Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

Ephesians 5: 15-17

Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Generosity, Healing, Reconciliation, Shepherds (away from being lost), Service, Mercy, Leadership

The Telescopes (Purples)

The telescopes are God’s prophets for the present day. Telescopes have foresight and long vision. They have the ability to foretell for the sake of warning and

guiding the Body of Christ. These eyes will be shown specific plots and plans of the enemy so they can be dismantled before they cause harm. They lead the people in praying into and breaking demonic assignments. Telescopes are able to uncover that which is hidden and are willing to say the hard things that we may not want to hear, yet need to know.

And the mind of the king of Syria was greatly troubled because of this thing, and he called his servants and said to them, “Will you not show me who of us is for the king of Israel?” And one of his servants said, “None, my lord, O king; but Elisha, the prophet who is in Israel, tells the king of Israel the words that you speak in your bedroom.”

2 Kings 6: 11-12

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.

Gifts of the Holy Spirit: Generosity, Prophesy, Discernment of Spirits, Faith

Lightning Rods (Yellows)

Lightning Rods stay at a high altitude and perceive what others cannot. They are capable of taking a strike and recovering.  These people conduct God’s power and glory, transporting the church from one era to the next… from glory to glory.

Their role is to transfer back the power and the rights and ownership of many stolen and usurped regions. They will conduct God’s power shorting out the systems of the world and taking back territory from long standing principalities.

The lightning rods operate in gifts of healing when sickness and disease is caused by spiritual warfare. They will return authority, break legal rights and restore things back to God’s will.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

Ephesians 6:12

For the kingdom of God does not consist in talk but in power. What do you wish? Shall I come to you with a rod, or with love in a spirit of gentleness?

1 Corinthians 4: 20-21

… an insignificant speck in an indescribably large universe.

God gave us a beautiful, amazing, world to live in. They even twist this to make us feel small and insignificant.

From the Mountains…

To the lush Coastlines…

To the Savannas of Africa… God created it all for us to live in and to steward.

Even the man-made structures and cities are designed to make us feel small and insignificant.

The implication, that Satan would have us believe is that God is too big to worry about little ‘ole me..

God

The truth is that God cares about every detail..

He cares about the drugs… the alcohol… the isolation… the abuse…the heartache…

God is in the details.

He cares enough to arrange the chance encounters that will change your life…

[Perhaps this is more your pace for a chance encounter!]

2 Chronicles 7:14 ESV

God uses the Small against the ‘Great’

The English title “Numbers” comes from the two censuses that are central features of this book. However, the Hebrew title, “In the Wilderness,” is more descriptive of the book.

Numbers tells how God’s people traveled from Mount Sinai to the border of the Promised Land. But when they refused to take possession of the Land, God made them wander in the wilderness for nearly forty years. In Numbers 13:17-14:12 (it is well worth re reading this story) we see that only 2 of 12 that reported back had sufficient faith in God. The other 10 were cowering and scared – only Joshua (the son of Nun) and Caleb (the son of Jephunneh) truly believed that God would protect them against the giants that they had spied in the land.

In Judges 7:1-23 God insisted that Gideon reduce his fighting force down to what we would consider a ridiculously low figure. This was the intended point – it had to be obvious that they could only be victorious because of God. If they had a sizable force then it would have been explained as possible with man, instead of only possible with God.

God grows the Small into the Mighty

The Mustard Seed and the Leaven

He put another parable before them, saying, “The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.” He told them another parable. “The kingdom of heaven is like leaven that a woman took and hid in three measures of flour, till it was all leavened.”

Matthew 13:31–32

God is in every detail…

A primary example of how God attends to every detail, and how he ensures that everything fits together perfectly, is in Laminin.

What is Laminin?
Laminin is your body’s cell-adhesion molecules. It is the glue that holds all the cells in your body together.

God has written Christ, the Cross, into every cell of our body…
Laminin holds every cell in each of us together.
Jesus is holding you together… God truly is in the details… he is in the small things…
Not only that, God demonstrates his glory most powerfully when he is working through the small and apparently weak.

The Garden

There’s something about being close to the Lord’s heart that seems to keep at bay the taming nature of religion and all the external influences that daily try to take our wildness away.

It all started in the garden. Can you imagine the beauty and the rugged landscape that the garden of Eden was? Eden, which means “delight,” was God’s masterpiece, His dream; man and woman were tangible poetry that He placed within it.

The garden would have been stunning, bursting with smells, tastes, and the vibrant colors of plants, trees and fruit. There would have been constant sounds of the wildlife everywhere you turned. It was the place of intimacy where God would walk in the garden with Adam and they would speak face-to-face, and this was God’s original design until man chose to eat from the wrong tree and the garden was closed off. Instantly, everything changed. The enemy had tricked man and woman, and they were suddenly aware of their sinful state, having the ability to choose life or death. Instead of face-to-face relationship with God, life became about rules and customs, sacrifices and atonements, and always reminded them that things weren’t the same and they would never measure up again. Humanity lost the garden and lost their wild.

The Three Gardens

Eden – we were cut off in the garden of ‘delight’ because we were created for us to enjoy God and God to enjoy us. We were not meant to live by rules, but in relationship to our God. (See Genesis 2:8–25.)
Gethsemane – Jesus stayed up all night praying and interceding in the Garden of Gethsemane. Gethsemane means “oil press” and represents the crushing and wounding that Christ would endure for us to be able to reconnect to Him. (See Matthew 26:36)
Garden Tomb – Return to the garden. This represents the full circle redemption plan of God to bring us back to the place where it all began, and all went wrong. The tomb was unnamed, but was owned by Joseph of Arimathea. (See Matthew 27:57-61)

You may have heard the description of the gospel as the story of a father who lost his children in the garden. So, He bankrupted Heaven to get them back. This eloquently tells us our Father’s heart, but more than that he set up something beautiful in how he orchestrated His rescue plan:

  • Joseph – means ‘double’
  • Arimathea – means ‘high place’
  • The Father’s mission was not just to take us back to the garden but to give us ‘double for our trouble’ and for us to ascend and be with Him in heavenly places.

On the cross Jesus fixed the sin issue and the access issue, and reinstated us back where we belong – back to our roots, in Eden, with Him.

The Counterfeit

“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you shut the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. For you neither enter yourselves nor allow those who would enter to go in. 
Matthew 23:13–15.

Old Covenant / Old Testament – in the absence of the Garden religion was the replacement. Religion is but a pale shadow of the real thing – a counterfeit – and it was a constant reminder to the people of Israel that they were falling way short of the mark.

New Covenant / New Testament – today we have access to the real thing, we can re-enter the garden, but we see people still acting as if they are bound. We see a church that is intent on keeping people locked in these chains of bondage – just like in Matthew 23 above.

Religion closes the gate, shuts the doors of the Kingdom of Heaven, it numbs people and blinds them to the resources and reality that they have access to.

John the Baptist was a Wild One – he paved the way for Jesus:

From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven has suffered violence, and the violent take it by force
Matthew 11:12.

Right now we see the signs all around us that God is awakening a people who would forsake the trodden path of religion and go back to the garden, back to their origins, and back to where it all began – and dare begin the quest of the wild!

Why Go Back?

Coming back to your original design and purpose unlocks a level of creative birthing you just cannot access through religion.

  • It breaks all bondage to and all agreements with the demonic or religion
  • It ushers in freedom into your life you didn’t have before
  • Creativity is rebirthed
  • Your voice is rebirthed, and
  • Your authority is activated

School of the Spirit not Man

Staying in submission to the Holy Spirit is a journey that requires constant taking stock and analysis of what we are following, feasting on, agreeing to, and with whom are running.
Jesus said it like this:

“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.
Matthew 6:24.

Money, fame, power are what often pull people away from God.

Beware coming under man’s yoke – under ungodly authority. Brothers and sisters in Christ can be helpful mentors and Holy Spirit led teachers and evangelists, but they are no substitute for submission to the leading of the Holy Spirit.

When you trade your freedom for unhealthy alignment, it only creates disastrous fruit, and eventually you become discouraged and disillusioned regarding your call.

Paul’s Concern for the Galatians

8 Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. 9 But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more? 10 You observe days and months and seasons and years! 11 I am afraid I may have labored over you in vain. 
12 Brothers, I entreat you, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. You did me no wrong. 13 You know it was because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you at first, 14 and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me as an angel of God, as Christ Jesus. 15 What then has become of your blessedness? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have gouged out your eyes and given them to me. 16 Have I then become your enemy by telling you the truth? 17 They make much of you, but for no good purpose.                   “Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; 
      break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor! 
                  For the children of the desolate one will be more 
      than those of the one who has a husband.” 
28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29 But just as at that time he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now. 30 But what does the Scripture say? “Cast out the slave woman and her son, for the son of the slave woman shall not inherit with the son of the free woman.” 31 So, brothers, we are not children of the slave but of the free woman.

#1. What do most modern churches look like?

Does the modern Church reflect what a New Testament Church looked like?

  • First Baptist Church
  • Providence Church
  • Multi Campus Churches – C3 has just moved into the area
  • Aspiring to have a TV ministry and 1000’s attending

  • Thousands of attendees?
  • Flashy sound and light show?
  • A paid staff?
  • A paid preacher?
  • What other features spring to mind?

#2. What do worldly organizations look like?

  • Thousands of employees
  • Flashy gimmicks to attract people
  • A paid staff
  • A paid figurehead
  • Permanent and dedicated premises
  • Always needing more growth, more revenue/income

#3. Where did the New Testament Churches meet?

We know that some were able to meet in Temples, but this was because they were still attached to the Jewish religion – they were ‘hedging their bets’ and attending both:

And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having favor with all the people.
Acts 2:45–47

Great persecution, followed resulting in Christians having to meet in their homes or in caves:

And there arose on that day a great persecution against the church in Jerusalem, and they were all scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2 Devout men buried Stephen and made great lamentation over him. 3 But Saul was ravaging the church, and entering house after house, he dragged off men and women and committed them to prison. 
Acts 8:1–3

There are other references to meetings in homes…

“When he [Peter] realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John who is called Mark, where there were many people gathered in prayer ”
Acts 12:12

… including Paul sending greetings to house churches:

Greet Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who risked their necks for my life, to whom not only I give thanks but all the churches of the Gentiles give thanks as well. Greet also the church in their house.
Romans 16:3-5

#4. Who is the Head of the Church?

Jesus Christ is the only Head of the Church

He is the head of the church, which is his body

And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills all in all. 
Ephesians 1:22–23

And he is the head of the body, the church. 
Colossians 1:18

The headquarters of Christ’s Church is where the Head is – in heaven:

“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also

John 14:1–3

And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.” 
Acts 1:9–11

In other words – there is no place in God’s plan for a Pope, President, CEO or Dictator!

#5. Who does the Bible say oversees Churches?

In Acts 20:17-35, Paul speaks directly to the elders, saying that the Holy Spirit made them overseers of the flock.
The same group are referred to, interchangeably as elders and overseers.
In Greek, elders is πρεσβυτέρους (presbyterous) and overseers is ἐπισκόπους (episkopous).

There is a consistent description of the Qualifications for Elders and we can see this in Titus 1:5-9, 1 Timothy 3:1-7 and 1 Peter 5:1-5.

Qualifications for Elders

This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you— if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. For an overseer, as God’s steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.
Titus 1:5-9
Qualifications for Overseers

The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God’s church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.
1 Timothy 3:1-7
Shepherd the Flock of God

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 
1 Peter 5:1–5

These are the Shepherds – the ones who are overall responsible. Elders oversee the Spiritual needs of the Body.

#6. Deacon – another key role

As stated, Deacons look after the physical needs of the church.

Qualifications for Deacons

Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things. Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus. 
1 Timothy 3:8–13.
And the twelve summoned the full number of the disciples and said, “It is not right that we should give up preaching the word of God to serve tables. Therefore, brothers, pick out from among you seven men of good repute, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, whom we will appoint to this duty. 
Acts 6:1–3.

If we did, who would they be accountable to?

  • Our Church Body concluded that we could establish these.
  • Leaders, appointed by the Elders (and approved by the Body) would be accountable to the Elders.

What other roles could exist in a Church and how would they fit in?

  • Our Church Body concluded that other roles would depend on the needs of the Body.
  • Leadership would typically be accountable to the Elders (though Elders could delegate as they saw fit).

#8. Should our work for the Lord be paid?

For you remember, brothers, our labor and toil: we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God. You are witnesses, and God also, how holy and righteous and blameless was our conduct toward you believers.

Warning Against Idleness

Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is walking in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us. For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us, because we were not idle when we were with you, nor did we eat anyone’s bread without paying for it, but with toil and labor we worked night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you. It was not because we do not have that right, but to give you in ourselves an example to imitate. For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat. For we hear that some among you walk in idleness, not busy at work, but busybodies. Now such persons we command and encourage in the Lord Jesus Christ to do their work quietly and to earn their own living.
2 Thessalonians 3:6–12

Conclusion

  • Our work should not be paid – our reward is not on earth
  • Our Body concluded that although this was the position of our Body, we could hire contractors to perform specific tasks
  • Our Body also concluded that this was not an absolute position – Paul was expressing a strong preference not a command from God
